Honouring the legacy of the Matchgirls’ Strike of 1888

137 years ago this week, 1400 young women and girls walked out of the Bryant & May factory in Bow, in a fight for their rights at work - pushing back against poverty, disease and exploitation.

Their strike sparked the modern trade union movement in Britain.

Tonight in Parliament, we honoured the legacy of the Matchgirls Strike of 1888.

Their courage changed the course of history - and their fight for dignity, safety and fairness at work still inspires us today.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to mark this proud chapter in East End and trade union history and to the Matchgirls Memorial and GMB Union for keeping their memory alive.
